Reflection of Project Space
Project Space came with the challenge of trying to find a way where a certain space could manipulate human emotion. We were all put into groups and given different options for the space. For my group, we were given the space of creepy, uncomfortable, unsafe environment which really seemed like a challenge at times. With the help of the group and the assignments that we were given, the group and myself were able to come up with a model for Project Space.
To start of this project we first, of course, read the directions completely in order to not make a mistake and receive a lower grade. The group then met together and exchanged contact information so we may discuss the plans in the near future. Meanwhile, the group came up with different ideas in order to create this space and know how exactly we were going to be able to show how a space could affect a person’s perception.
Since we had the topic of anything dangerous or just generally a space where someone feels uncomfortable, the group brainstormed ideas of what places had actually affected us emotionally to the point where we just wanted to get out of there and never come back. We came up with many ideas such as, an empty abandoned parking lot at night, since people never know if there is actually something there, so the group came up with the idea of something mysterious and unknown is what makes people uncomfortable. Another idea was a haunted house or an abandoned house, in general, since fear can affect emotion drastically. So fear must also be included in the space since people most definitely want to run away from their fears. Another idea that came up in discussion was going to opposite direction and using a space that most people would not first think as a “unsafe” environment such as crowded streets or really opened places. But in the end, as a group, we decided to go with the obvious, a place where someone feels fear and mystery. What better place than a cemetery.
After we finally came up with an exact place and the reasons why, we had to decide how visually we were going to present this to the classroom. Originally, a computer 3D software was brought up since many groups were going to present this way, but the topic was too complicated to construct since these soft wares only had “nice” and “clean” spaces and furniture and it also did not include torn down walls or tombstones so the software was out of the question. Another idea was getting pictures and making a collage of what we think would be creepy. But again, no magazine or many pictures had exactly what we were looking for. In the end, we decided to change from amazing English students to future architectures, so we ended doing a model of a cemetery.
After looking at several images of cemeteries, I advised the group what supplies to get for the project since in high school we were required to do several of these kinds of projects. For this assignment, we needed a place to set the cemetery on as well as, of course, tombstones, dirt, grass, and a fence, just like any good horror movie. I honestly wish that we could have had more money and time to make a little small house in the middle of the cemetery in order to give it that extra little touch of spooky, but the project came out looking great.
This section of the course was a bit rough since human emotions are so hard to reflect especially because many people have different thoughts and opinions of what makes a place the way it is. With the help of the group, we were able to come up with the idea of a cemetery and build a model of the project since it was the best way to show this idea.

Reflection of comic project
This group project came with a new challenge for all of us. We had to give a definition of the word “revolution” in not an essay or any written assignments, but a visual way, a comic. It was difficult because there are so many meanings and ways to express what a revolution really is. Brainstorming was truly the hardest part of doing this project.
The comic began with four strangers, a project, and empty thoughts. We started by trying to make up a story of what a revolution is. In order for us to be able to do that, we had to come up with a true definition of what the word meant and how we could make it into a story with cartoons and try to connect with the audience. Of course we had some help from Scott McCloud who wrote a comic on comics. We came up with the idea that revolution is just a society that is trying to make a change that will affect their lives. A war could be an example of how people begin a revolution or a simple protest. All these ideas began coming up but we still did not have a concrete story or way that we would express our thoughts. Class was over by the time we finished brainstorming.
The next time we met up it was a week before the assignment was due. I found a program on the internet that had cute and simple figures that I thought would be perfect for this project. We team members thought that the characters I designed were good so we went ahead and decided to use the characters. At first we wanted to make a couple who were separated from war. But this idea just did not come through at the end. So we decided to take it step by step and started with the main character of the story. We concluded that our main character would be a soldier in Iran who comes back proud to have been fighting in war but sees some surprises that the war is not what he thought it would be. We debated at first what kind of revolution this would be in since the assignment did not really specify. At the end we decided to just stick with the Iranian war since the topic was already included in the novel that we were reading, Persepolis. We also chose to go in a different direction than the book since we made it a male main character that actually supports the war unlike Marjane. We gave this comic a beginning, middle, and end. At last, it was my time of the project.
I originally wanted to hand draw this comic but with the amount of time I was given I did not see that possible so I was lucky to find an internet program that allowed me to bring these characters to life. It started with a couple of characters then movements and it was incredible to see it all come together at the end. A challenge was that some of the websites do not have all the things that you want. My group disused having the character to drive around to the places he wanted to get. But the program did not have a car so I had to improvise and just do close ups of the character walking. Also the panels were a huge problem since the program just let me do a couple of different columns but I really tried to vary the sizes of the strips to make it seem more as a comic. It was a challenge but it got done and I think it came out close to perfection.
It was a challenge for me and my group but with well-organized planning of a story and a good computer program, the comic came to life. Revolution for our group is a change in society and their people. The Iranian revolution affected our character by changing his mind about the war. He saw how the people closest to him were affected and it shows that a revolution is not only a change in society but a change in the way a person thinks.
